Marquette Method of Natural Family Planning

The Marquette Method

The Marquette Method of Natural Family Planning is a modern, effective, evidence-based method of monitoring your fertility to either avoid or achieve a pregnancy. Through the use of the Clearblue Fertility Monitor and, if desired, other biological markers of fertility, you can track female urinary hormones to identify the fertile window of your menstrual cycle.

The Marquette Method of NFP is designed for engaged and married couples who desire to order their sexuality with God's design for married love. It is implicit that they abstain from intercourse or genital contact during the fertile time of the woman's menstrual cycle if they are trying to avoid pregnancy and do not use any form of contraception or other means besides abstinence (i.e., withdrawal) to avoid pregnancy.

All married couples are called to be generous to new life, but may find there are times where they have discerned serious reasons for spacing or limiting children. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "It is their duty to make certain that their desire is not motivated by selfishness but is in conformity with the generosity appropriate to responsible parenthood" (CCC 2368). Natural Family Planning helps couples to better understand their fertility, encourages healthy communication, and is fully aligned with Catholic Church teaching.

Why "From the Beginning?"

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus, in discussion with the Pharisees, says, "Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate." (Mt 19:4-6)

What is Jesus referring to when he says "from the beginning"? In Pope Saint John Paul II's Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body, the entire first chapter, Christ Appeals to the Beginning, explores this question. When Christ refers to the "beginning," he summarizes passages from Genesis, beginning with Chapter 1: "In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth...God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and God said to them: Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it" (Gn 1:1, 27-28). He further references Genesis Chapter 2, "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body" (Gn 2:24).

I chose the name From the Beginning NFP, not because the passage from Genesis was the first reading at my wedding (complete coincidence!), but because I often find myself reflecting on the creation story. Man and woman were uniquely made for each other and designed specially with the ability to bring new life into this world. Natural Family Planning is about learning to live with this gift of fertility in God's design for married love.

Meet the Instructor

Hi! My name is Addie Finnie. I am a Registered Nurse with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Marquette University, where my interest in Natural Family Planning first began. My husband and I have two young children and we live outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I am a stay at home mom, but I previously worked in the Cardiovascular ICU. I enrolled in the teacher training training program through the Marquette University College of Nursing Institute of Natural Family Planning in 2019 and am under the guidance of a preceptor until my certification is complete.

Update: I am currently only accepting clients locally (in person or online) in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
